| Smurfit-Stone Extends Tender Offer for Senior Notes |

Chicago, Illinois, USA, 20 June 2006 — Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (Nasdaq: SSCC) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Smurfit-Stone Container Enterprises, Inc., is extending the expiration date of its tender offer, announced on 23 May 2006, for all of its outstanding 9¼% senior notes due 2008, and a portion of its outstanding 9¾% senior notes due 2011.
As of 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on 19 June 2006, approximately USD 298 million of the outstanding 9¼% senior notes and approximately USD 723 million of the outstanding 9¾% senior notes have been tendered.
The expiration time has been extended from 20 June 2006 to 29 June 2006, 12:00 midnight, Eastern time. All other aspects of the tender offer, which commenced on 23 May 2006, remain unchanged and in effect.
