WISCONSIN (From news reports) -- Multiple area fire departments responded to extinguish a fire which was reported at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 26 at the Louisiana-Pacific (LP) manufacturing plant three miles south of Hayward.

A caller reported to sheriff's dispatch that there were flames coming out of a corner of the building. Employees were evacuated from the plant.

Responding to the fire were about 30 firefighters, including 10 from the City of Hayward, 10 from the Town of Hayward, and personnel from the Bass Lake, Stone Lake, Lac Courte Oreilles and Spooner fire departments.

City of Hayward fire chief Mike Herrmann said the main part of the fire was in the roof insulation. Firefighters had to access the fire from the top, cut the roof membrane off and pull the insulation out. The city's fire tower truck was used to hook up water hoses to the bucket at the top of the tower.

The fire started above the press area, but "they were not sure what started it, because that line was down for maintenance," Herrmann said.

Fire departments were on scene for about three hours, most of that time for the overhaul after the fire was put out.

The Sept. 26 fire was "almost identical" to a fire in the same location several years ago, but this time it covered about half the roof area of the previous fire, Herrmann said.
