Fire at Graphic Packaging Macon, Georgia paper mill caused by tractor malfunction, fire officials say
MACON, Ga. -- A fire broke out at a South Macon paper mill Tuesday evening, June 25, after a tractor malfunctioned and caught on fire, according to Macon-Bibb County Fire Department's lead fire investigator Capt. Kyle Murray. The call came in just before 8 p.m. at the Graphic Packaging International facility. Murray says the fire was started when a tractor malfunctioned in the mulch pit. Before the fire got out of hand, the fire was contained to the tractor and the wood chips the tractor was working on, Murray said. It is not clear whether or not the tractor was on at the time of the fire or if anyone was inside the tractor when the fire broke out. However, Murray says no one was injured and the fire was extinguished roughly 30 minutes after the fire was reported. He said the fire was fully out at around 8:30 p.m. Murray says crews would remain on the scene to make sure all the hot spots were under control.
