UPM Engages Renewed Apprenticeship Programs

Helsinki, Finland 20 September 2013 --  UPM has decided to engage renewed apprenticeship programs at its Kymi and Kaukas mills. Today will be opened a total number of 45 apprentice vacancies in Kuusankoski and Lappeenranta for a two-year trainee program. The renewed apprenticeship program aims at vocational degree in paper industry and is carried out in co-operation with Sampo vocational school of Saimaa.

”The average age of our personnel is high and we want to engage the training of the new working generation in time before current generations begin to retire”, says Juha Kääriäinen General Manager of Kymi and Kaukas pulp and paper mills.

The apprenticeship trainee program will enable working in both process and maintenance duties at pulp and paper mills. The two-year program aims at vocational degree in paper industry. Entry level requirements include 18 years of age and applicable vocational degree, e.g. in electrical, automation, machine, automotive or process engineering.

The renewed apprenticeship program will mainly consist of practical training at work which aims at building more versatile professional capabilities in different departments in the mills. “Our versatile trainee program is targeted to increase the mobility of our employees within and between Kymi and Kaukas mills but also between other UPM mills in Finland especially during maintenance breaks when the need of repair and maintenance staff is high”, Juha Kääriäinen continues.

UPM’s Kymi and Kaukas mills have planned to engage trainee programs annually. Applicants that are chosen for the program will get two-year apprenticeship contracts. Applications for the program starting in January 2014 are to be sent through UPM’s internet site latest 15th of October 2013.

UPM Kymi

UPM Kymi in Kuusankoski is pulp, energy and paper manufacturing integrate which produces conifer and birch pulp and coated and uncoated fine paper. UPM Kymi employs approx. 600 people.

UPM Kaukas

UPM Kaukas mills manufacture pulp, magazine paper, bioenergy and sawn timber. UPM’s global Research and Development Centre and Kaukaan Voima bio-power plant are also located at Kaukas. UPM’s biorefinery for renewable diesel fuel will start production in 2014. UPM’s Kaukas mills and units employ approx. 1 200 people.
