Resolute Halts Newsprint Production at Baie-Comeau


Montreal, Quebec, Canada 28 July 2017 -- Resolute Forest Products's Baie-Comeau newsprint mill suffers from declining demand. The company has therefore decided to suspend production for a month.

Canadian forestry group Resolute Forest Products has temporarily shut down its newsprint mill in Baie-Comeau in Canada. Production will be down for one month, reports the company,a dding that production has been stopped on 17 July and should be restarted one month later, on 17 August.

The Baie-Comeau newsprint mill operates two paper machines which have the capacity to produce a total of 319,000 tpy of newsprint. It has 220 employees.

Unifor says the company should consider the transformation of the paper machine at Baie-Comeau for example to tissue production or other paper grades. The newsprint market was a declining market, it added, expressing concern about the future of the mill.
