Denver, Colorado, USA 27 July 2016 -- (From The Denver Post) -- Packaging Corporation of America notified the state's labor agency this week that it will close its Commerce City plant on Oct. 7 and lay off 70 workers.

Officials from Packaging Corporation of America did not return calls seeking comment on the closing of its facility at 5501 Brighton Blvd. The facility offers graphics and design services and supplies corrugated containers to customers, according to the plant's webpage.

In its most recent quarter, which ended June 30, the Lake Forest, Ill., firm reported a drop in second-quarter sales, coming in at $1.42 billion, compared to the year ago's $1.45 billion. Net income rose slightly to 115.9 million from $114 million. In a securities filing, the company said it closed a manufacturing facility and paper distribution center earlier this year.

According to the company's site, it has three other plants in the Denver area and 120 facilities nationwide. At the end of 2015, it employed 13,000 people nationwide.
