Arauco Approves Investment for New Panel Mill in the USA
Print
Santiago, Chile, South America 27 October 2016 -- ARAUCO confirmed approval to begin construction work of the new panel mill in Grayling, Michigan, which will have an annual production capacity of 800,000 m3 of particleboard. The execution of this US$400 million investment will begin during 2017 and is expected to initiate operation in late 2018.

This is the construction of one of the largest particleboard mills in North America and one of the most productive around the world. The mill will also create employment during the construction phase for an average of 300 people (and a peak of 600 people), and an average of 250 people during the mill's operation, in addition to benefits for the economic and community development of Crawford County.

This initiative is an addition to investments made by ARAUCO in North America in recent years -Moncure and Flakeboard- with nine production facilities distributed in the United States and Canada. ARAUCO's Senior Vice-President Commercial & Corporate Affairs, Charles Kimber, said, "we're very happy and appreciate North American authorities who once again have trusted ARAUCO. This strategic action reinforces our productive position in North America, an important market for us. This is how we expand our presence in the world with new and interesting challenges".

As a matter of fact, the North American market accounts for a little over 25% of ARAUCO's total sales. In addition, the company announced that one of its key objectives is to improve logistics throughout its production chain and support the growth of its customers located in the mid-western region.

Evolution of wood panels at ARAUCO

ARAUCO is one of the primary producers of timber products, offering a wide variety of sawn timber, plywood, panels, remanufactured wood products and mouldings with different finishes, appearances and value adding processes for architecture, design, construction, packaging and remodeling"

ARAUCO's purpose is to position ourselves as a relevant actor in the furniture and design market, including the home and office segment by developing value-added products. This new mill helps us to meet this huge challenge".

In recent years, ARAUCO has achieved sustained growth in terms of wood panel production, mainly due to the company's expansion to Argentina and Brazil in past decades, the purchase of production facilities in the United States and Canada, and more recently in Europe and South Africa, all of which has positioned the company as the second global producer, with a production capacity of 10.3 million m3.

The company's Timber business sales in 2015 were US$2,633 million, which accounts for 51% of ARAUCO's consolidated sales.
